9 things I wanted to know about you
– Jennifer Hawkins designer of JLH

1. How did you start in the industry?

I had a dream to design shoes and I had to make it happen. I started small and the business has taken off, it's a dream come true.

2. How would you describe the customer you design for?

A woman that lives life to the fullest. She is a class act who loves to have fun, is confident but has a cheeky side too.

3. Do you have a favourite style of shoe to design?

I love them all. I let loose in the design studio with everything in front of me. It's an amazing process. The smell of leather gets me excited! Haha!

4. What are your favourite brands? (Not just in footwear!)

BALMAIN, Alexander Wang, Manning Cartell, Ellery , Gucci, McQueen, Camilla Skovgaard, Toni Maticevski, Aurellio Costarella and Mulberry

5. On a typical day, what style of shoes do you wear?

Depends on my mood and the occasion. I wear heels, flats and wedges, but I do love the way a heel makes you feel!

6. How many pairs of shoes do you own?

I have a shoe wall in my new place, it's out of control! It holds around 200 pairs of heels. My shelves have my flats, and boots and then some of my faves are in storage. So... I am really embarrassed to say, I think I have shoe issues!

7. How do you seek inspiration?

Every day events and traveling!! My head is constantly thinking about the next season, what would be fresh and fun.

8. How do you approach designing a new season collection?

I started JLH by designing heels that were missing from my wardrobe. So usually I have an idea in my head, I pen it and then wait until all the constructions and materials are in front of me and go crazy!

9. Any words of advice for someone wanting to get a start in the industry?

You need passion, drive and a great work ethic!

What’s lighter than a pair of bananas?

One banana! Well, that’s the most obvious answer but here’s a bit of trivia for you: a pair of Rollie shoes.

Weighing at 320 grams, a pair of Rollies can make you feel, quite literally, light on your feet! The idea to create a range of lightweight shoes came to footwear designer Vince Lebon after his flight attendant wife’s fruitless search for stylish and light shoes that were easy to travel with.

“I wanted to make shoes so light that she could fit more into her suitcase, look trendy and feel comfortable all whilst trotting around the world,” says Rollie director and designer Vince.

“After nine years in the footwear industry and working very closely with international brands, I tried to capture the essence of simplicity, practicality and fashionableness. I searched to create an entirely new shoe concept.” And that’s how Rollie was born.

Featuring a selection of lace-up derby, chukka, boxer and brogue shoes in many colours – from basic black and tan to playful melon pinks and fresh mint green – the product perfectly captures the brand’s ethos of lightness and fun.

“Rollie shoes are for everyone with a fun attitude to life, the young at heart, no matter what age.” Vince says.

A typical day for him always involves looking out for new colours and materials that’ll update the range.

“I’m sketching, revising samples, designing our lookbook or a limited shoe box run. There’s always something new and exciting to do. Also I’m constantly developing new silhouettes that I think will work well with our unique styling, colour and lightness.”

With a background in multimedia and graphic design, Vince has developed an eye for drawing his inspiration from blogs, movies, music, magazines, people and travel.

“Without being cheesy I’d say life in general [inspires me]. There’s inspiration everywhere! I find spending time with my family refocuses me. It puts all the long hours, trips and hard work into perspective. I also have a huge backlog of books I need to read so if I’m ever stuck I’ll just pick one up.”

Vince says he fell into footwear development, citing that the complexity of shoe design is what spurs him forward.

“I just love footwear design. It’s not uncommon to have more than 20 components in one shoe and I find it very technical and challenging.”

With a brand that’s focused on simplicity, this is something of a balance when it comes to shoe design.

“Complexity is something that I try to avoid, right from our product offering through to our advertising material. It’s also very important to use quality materials. I find that not just with footwear design but design in general, simplicity is key. To design something simple you must truly understand the product process and its core purpose.”
